now there is no telling how this arrest for grand theft will actually play a role in her political career or affect her relationship with her constituents. >> the items that were taken were articles of clothing. >> reporter: assembly woman mary hayashi represents the castro valley. but she was here in san francisco's union square when she ran into trouble on sunday. san francisco police say they received a call from neiman marcus at 12:15 p.m. a security guard at the store told officers he detained a woman who walked out the door with $2445 worth of clothing. >> officers responded and made contact with the agent, at which time we then took custody over for them. and the suspect, who is suspect hayashi was charged for felony grand theft. >> reporter: hayashi's long-time friend sam singer is acting as her spokesperson. he says she is not a thief.

>> the assembly woman made a terrible mistake. she accidentally stepped outside without paying for the items. she fully intended to pay for them. >> reporter: he says she was trying to do too many things at once. he he says she picked up the item but ended up having a conversation with the sales woman on a another floor. >> she us had several cell phone conversations and texting. she made a mistake. >> reporter: she pleaded not guilty in san francisco in front of man who holds the same position as her husband does in alameda county, superior court judge. the district attorney's office says they have surveillance video that documents the entire incident. >> one of the things when you're shoplifting, there is a lot of video surveillance video, a lot of cameras, eyes watching you either from a camera or eyes on the floor from loss prevention agents. so the suspects are really taking a risk when they're doing something like this. >> reporter: a neiman marcus corporate spokesperson would

only say that they're working closely with local authorities on this. hayashi's next court date is november 15th. traci grant, nbc bay area news. >> thank you. calling her decision to drive reckless, california's chief budget officer is apologizing tonight after getting arrested for drunk driving. a highway patrol officer pulled over an her this morning in downtown sacramento. she was booked under the suspicion of driving under the influence and booked at the county jail. she offered her resignation, but it wasn't accepted and that she is taking responsibility for her lapse in judgment. well, is it a powder keg ready to go or a spark to be fizzle? the occupy movement continues to occupy the minds of many protesters who remain camped out at oakland's plaza. tonight an oscar-win film maker

is there to see the political activists firsthand. jodi hernandez joins us live there. today very interesting. jean quan, speaking at the same time as michael moore. i think michael moore got more press. >> reporter: every day has been interesting out here, jessica. once again, hundreds of demonstrators have gathered here at franco gallo plaza. they are talking right now about plans for a general strike that they hope to hold next wednesday. they are also getting some affirmation from a famous activist who paid a visit to occupy oakland today. >> occupy oakland! >> reporter: filmmaker activist michael moore got occupy oakland demonstrators fired up this afternoon. denouncing police response to tuesday night's protests and calling on mayor jean quan to step down. >> i'm sorry that when she came yesterday to talk that she didn't wait to speak to the general assembly. >> we need some stability and leadership right now.

the last thing i'm thinking about is my political career, whether i'm going to resign or not. >> reporter: tonight the mayor is doing damage control, responding to the criticism by promising a thorough investigation and issuing an apology. >> i apologize because people were hurt. and, you know, i think when we plan the original action, which went relatively more smoothly, that we were concerned about people's safety. and i don't know. it appears to me that there may have been mistakes made by people who are involved in this probably on both sides. >> reporter: tonight a tv commercial lambasting the mayor is airing in the bay area. and civil rights attorneys are joining in the call for reform. >> i think the mayor and the police department have to clearly assess what they did wrong in this situation and make sure it doesn't reoccur. >> no beanbag should be fired into a crowd as a crowd control mechanism.

>> reporter: and we are back here live at franco gallo plaza where you can see the demonstration continues tonight. the mayor is promising an investigation. she says she is hearing all of the concerns and says that she hopes to have some answers next week. apparently city hall has been flooded by phone calls, e-mails, and text messages. they are getting an earful from all over the country, and really, all over the world. and meantime, people are passing out these flyers, calling for a recall. apparently a petition is being circulated out here. again, the mayor taking a lot of heat. but again, promising to react and have some answers, hopefully next week. reporting live in oakland, i'm jodi hernandez, nbc bay area news. >> okay, jodi, thank you. mayor quan in the international headlines now. we have other headlines. special delivery to city hall today for medical marijuana supporters. they brought 17 boxes filled with signed petitions to the san jose city clerk. the signatures are from voters

who want to repeal the city's new pot club rules which limit san jose to just ten dispensaries. activists say they submitted more than 48,000 signatures, far more than the roughly 29,000 they need to qualify for a referendum. the signatures now go to the registrar of voters for verification. then it's on to the city council, which could repeal the ordinance or send the issue to voters next june. a bay area marine has been killed in afghanistan. sergeant steven dunning was killed yesterday while conducting options in helmand province of afghanistan. this is a picture of him from a "vanity fair" article published last year about the faces of war in afghanistan. the marine sergeant operated bomb disposal robots. dunning graduated from milpitas high school in 1998. he was 31 years old. stealing from the pto, a former treasurer for the trace elementary school parent organization has pleaded no contest to embezzlement.

she was with the group for one year beginning in 2008. then gayle used the pto's debit card to withdraw cash and make over $20,000 in unauthorized purchases. police say she was caught when a new member reviewed the organization's financial documents earlier this year. the pto's president plead guilty to the same crime. a bizarre twist in the case of threats against several east bay schools. police say an antioch man is behind the threats, and he used a former friend's name to try and ruin his reputation. police arrested him this morning. they say he sent e-mails, letters and faxes to several contra costa schools over the last couple of weeks. that led to increased police patrols and parents even pulling their children out of school. he eis being held on $350,000 bail in the county jail in martinez. police say he had no connection to those schools that received the threats, and that they found evidence that he was involved during a search of his home. caught in the child porn

sting, a bay area task force conducted a sweep that led to multiple arrests in sonoma county. six men were arrested on suspicion of having and distributing child pornography. police say investigators searched the internet for people who were actively downloading and distributing child porn. the suspects were booked in sonoma county jail on $10,000 bail. the suspects are scheduled to be arraigned monday afternoon in sonoma county superior court. you probably haven't heard of nerdles, but they're causing problems in the bay. in a first of its kind program, environmental workers are trying to rid the bay of plastic pellets called nerdles. here is joe rosato jr. >> reporter: the channel is going to be the left all day. stay out of the channel if you can. in a remote part of the east bay today, an unusual expedition got underway. >> we've got the california clapper rail and the saltwater harvest mouse which are both listed endangered species. >> reporter: a special cleanup

crew waded into a slough in the oyster bay original shoreline in san leandro. but the target wasn't wildlife or rare plant species. it was an oddly named bit of garbage. >> we're going to be primarily going to pick up nerdles which are preproduction plastic pellets. >> reporter: nerdles is the name for the tiny plastic pellets used to make plastic bags to car bumpers. intended for manufacturing, they have somehow found their way into the bay. >> with the pole skimmer we can capture those floating on the water. >> reporter: they have charged four san leandro companies for discharging nerdles. the companies were ordered to clean up. >> it's the first time a company in california has been the subject of an enforcement action because of getting nerdles where they're not supposed to be. >> reporter: bowl lists say the threat is that birds and sea creatures eat the tiny pellets. >> they're very, very hard on

wildlife. they basically sort of rent space in the bellies of fish and birds and other creatures. >> reporter: so today cleanup crews hired by the four cited companies began collecting n nerdles and other trash. >> dolls, roller blades we found yesterday. >> reporter: state inspectors say since the cleanup order, the four companies have taken steps to stem their nerdle release. the state plans to expand the inspections to other companies in an effort to crack down on a bad problem with a really bad name. joe rosato jr., nbc bay area news. >> now you know. nerdles. still ahead at 6:00, putting the final piece in place, a milestone for crews today working on the bay bridge. it's the same cemetery where he was shot and killed. now a member of the hells angels will be laid to rest here. coming up, what authorities are doing to stop more violence.

you ever tried to lift one thousand tons? they did it today. a major milestone for the bay bridge, the last section of the eastern span bridge deck was put into place. in fact, our nbc helicopter over the bridge right now. a beautiful shot here. eventually it will connect the bay bridge with yerba buena and treasure islands. but as you can probably imagine,

installing that last piece was tricky. here now nbc bay area's christie smith. >> reporter: at sunrise, the last piece of deck was hoisted up, a process that took hours, but finished a puzzle two years in the making. >> right now we're lifting a thousand ton piece of steal that is the last piece of what will be our self-anchored suspension bridge. this is the day we connect san francisco and oakland structurally with our new bridge. >> reporter: 150 feet in the air over the san francisco bay with a crane, the self-anchored suspension span still needs joints because it's one of the most advanced earthquake bridges in the world. oakland mayor jean quan was among the speakers who after being heckled by occupy protesters last night, just focused on the future. >> we all felt those tremors last week. you have to remember why we're here today. we live in earthquake country. there is so much work that we have to do. >> reporter: but with this, the new bay bridge is taking shape with a signature design.

and unlike traditional suspension bridges that are anchored into the ground, the main cable here anchors into the roadway, around and down. >> the next thing we'll do is begin installing the main cable for the bridge that cable weighs over 5,000 tons. it will take the better part of a year to get it in. >> reporter: so the final piece went in without a problem. the new eastern span opens in 2013. christie smith, nbc bay area news. >> while the golden gate bridge will soon be celebrating its 75th birthday. to commemorate that milestone, may 27th, 2012, golden gate bridge officials are enhancing the experience. they'll have new projects including a visitor's pavilion, improvements to the trails and two new overlooks. officials say no money from tolls will be used for the projects. it's all funded through private donations. bridge officials are also holding 75 special tributes for the 75th anniversary. >> we've now signed up 75 organizations that will be celebrating the bridge and its

history in music, in film, in events. at the giants baseball stadium. a whole variety of community locations. >> well, there will be a special festival for the bridge's anniversary weekend of may 26th and 27th. and guess what? nbc bay area is a proud sponsor of the 75th anniversary. a magazine article is stirring things up in the bay area because it's about the bay area. specifically, how one of its cities is struggling badly with its finances. we want to bring in our business tech reporter scott budman. scott, if you're in "vanity fair," you kind of want it to be about fashion or how cool you are. >> reporter: that would be the ideal. but this overall by michael lewis focuses on san jose and its money problems. largely he says because of how pension and retirement funds have eaten away at the city's budget. lewis guess on to estimate that within two years, san jose will be able to afford 1600 workers on its payroll. that's about a third of what the city has today.

san jose mayor chuck reed is quoted in the article saying cities have basically become vehicles for paying former city workers. we quote mayor reed there is a corruption here. it's not just a financial corruption, it's a corruption of the attitude of public service. well, if google has its way, an upgrade is on its way to your living room. the company revamping its google tv with new software it says will make it easier to use. they'll also add android functionality. google tv launched in 2010 but sales have been slow. which doesn't mean that google isn't a good place to work. fortune magazine names it's the world's fourth best place in which to work. silicon valley did well. netapp came in third. cisco, intuit, and salesforce also on the list. if you like making grilled cheese sandwiches, we have a company you might like to work for. the melt. you may remember we profiled their first store opening on august 30th. it is expanding, planning to

open two more san francisco eateries next week along with one at the stanford shopping center. the melt, founded by a tech entrepreneur is backed by venture capital funding and is a hit so far. not bad for grilled cheese. >> and you know who is a big fan of the melt. >> i have been waiting for someone to invite me to the melt. nobody so far. >> scott, thank you. enjoy your weekend. >> thank you. speaking of the weekend, let's bring in our chief meteorologist jeff ranierly rhode island. >> i know i can count on jeff. >> of course, it's on me. you could have put some cheese on some bread and it would have melted out there with some of the warmer and mild temperatures. it was really spectacular with upper 70s. close to 80 here as well in napa. 7 in san francisco. 76 down in los gatos. and 78 in santa cruz. let's bring you outside right now as the sunsets, we are looking at yet again some clear visibility back towards san francisco. that northwest wind scouring out any kind of fog that is trying to develop offshore.

so that means fog-free conditions right now in san francisco with the sun setting, and a temperature of 62 degrees. that humidity also dry out there right now. but it's still pleasant here throughout tonight. 67 in hayward. 69 in san jose. 65 in san francisco. and 63 currently in novato. for tonight it is yet again clear and also cold. however, i don't think it's going to be as cold as it has been the past two nights because now we've had two days of decent warming with high pressure sitting just offshore. that region will be responsible for keeping it dry as we head throughout this weekend. we are going to be talking about rainfall. let's take a look. by the morning hours, the system lines up offshore. and right now the forecast models into thursday morning do weaken the storm quite a bit and push it more to the north. but nonetheless we're still keeping showers in the forecast on thursday. we'll have more on that coming up in my seven-day forecast. otherwise, tomorrow starting off with the coldest numbers in the north bay with mid-40s. 50 in livermore, and 50 in san

jose and decent warming here by 10:00 and 11:00 with mid 60s in the east bay, also down to the south bay. if you're doing any travel this weekend, we heard on "nbc nightly news with brian williams," there is a storm taking shape in the midatlantic. it's going to push up into the northeast, a very rare october snowstorm happening for some of the major cities. if you're traveling philadelphia, new york city, hartford, connecticut, also boston looking at anywhere from heavy snow to also rain mixing in. so we can expect some major delays here. so travelers heading out of san francisco in the bay area, but if you're staying here, it looks great. >> thank you, jeff. we've got a date. and from the grilled cheese to a circus on a plate. we'll show you one restaurant taking a burger that they dubbed the ringmaster. it's a rare and complicated surgery, but two sisters from san jose will undergo separation surgery next week at lucille packard children's hospital. i'm marianne favro. coming up, i'll talk with the lead surgeon.

in the late 1980s, work began on a plan to circumnavigate the trail. >> there is still work to be done. new sections are gradually being added. here is nbc bay area's doug mcconnell on the trail. >> when people think about some of the most beautiful things in the bay area, i would say about 90% of them are within walking distance of the bay trail. >> reporter: carin debray has walked a thousand miles around the bay, documenting what sees on her website, walking the bay. >> if i can do it, you can do

it. and i just really hope that a lot more people are inspired to get outside and walk the bay trail. >> my favorite thing about the bay trail is seeing people using the bay trail. >> reporter: laura thompson manages the development of the bay trail for the association of bay area governments. and its many partners. >> watching the community numbers enjoy this open space in this resource that we've created really gives me a lot of satisfaction. >> there is not a place that i've walked in the bay trail where there is not something fantastic and new to see every day. >> reporter: carin and laura know that the bay trail leads to thousands of acres of old salt pines, now being restored, and teeming with many species of waterfowl in their seasonal displays. >> so it's just fantastic. a great opportunity for anyone that is interested in wildlife, getting some exercise, fresh air, and it's free. >> reporter: the bay trail guides us to history too. past a quiet and abandoned old marina in historic alviso, and the back door of the legendary

moffett field in mountain view there. >> are views you get both on the bayside and on the landside are just amazing. >> reporter: and that you can't get anywhere else? >> absolutely. >> reporter: creating the bay trail has been a huge undertaking in all nine bay area counties, involving 47 cities and many businesses, public agencies, nonprofit organizations, and concerned citizens, working to give us all easy access to the bay. to nature, and to history in our own backyard. >> i think it requires persistence. that's definitely been the case over over the last 22 years. >> reporter: that persistence will pay off soon when this urban stretch along the oakland estuary gets a little longer. this gate will come down and a new section of the bay trail will offer a bit more public access to the water's edge. >> the ribbon cuttings are my favorite part of the job, yeah. it's a sense of accomplishment and moving on towards the other gap that need to be completed.

>> reporter: job is near existing legs of the trail in richmond where an active industrial portion of the bay's shoreline will be open to the public for the very first time near a wetland and the chevron refinery. we'll all be able to pass by a forest of solar panels that help power a west contra costa water treatment plant on a part of the trail managed by east bay parks >> it's great that we're able to support the waste water district in telling their story while they are supporting the bay area trail and the park district in telling our stories and public access. >> reporter: mile by mile, this is a trail of many parts being formed that will one day entirely circle san francisco bay. doug mcconnell, nbc, bay area news. >> it is beautiful. the remaining 180 mile or so of the gaps in the trail will be filled piece by piece. the estimated cost, about $150 million. still ahead here at 6:00, lost in the woods for nearly a week, the amazing story of survival for a young autistic boy.

police and a south bay community are bracing for the funeral of a hells angel member who will be buried in the same place he was gunned down two weeks ago while attending a fellow biker's memorial. >> elise kirschner joins us from san jose with why authorities think this funeral is going to be different than the last one. >> reporter: well, for one thing, guys, they say the funeral that was held here two weeks ago, it was open to the public. the one scheduled for tomorrow will be invitation only. and authorities say that will make it much more manageable.

the chaos and violence is still fresh in crystal lake's mind. >> we pretty much locked ourselves in the house and okay, we're home, we're safe, the kids are fine. >> reporter: two weeks ago steve tauzin was shot. now he'll be honored at oak hill cemetery in san jose. lake lives just two blocks away. >> i don't think they're going to do anything to any random people. i hope their funeral doesn't get disrespected. >> basically, we have spent the last two weeks preparing for tomorrow and hoping we'll be able to avoid any further problems. >> reporter: not taking any chances, san jose police will be out in force. >> we're not going to stand at the door and check tickets. again, it needs to be noted that these people are coming to pay their respects for somebody. and we don't want to agitate them. >> reporter: at least 70 officers will be on-site, and will close the gates if things get out of hand or people crash the invitation only funeral. authorities also say unlike the

last funeral, they've been in constant contact with members of the motorcycle club. >> and now the big question is well, are you expecting that to happen again? well, the hells angels are telling us no, that is not going to happen again. >> reporter: lake isn't waiting around to find out. >> tomorrow we're going to have -- we're not even sure we're going to keep the kids in the neighborhood. >> reporter: and tonight authorities are still looking for steven ruiz, the man they say is responsible for killing tauzin. detectives believe the killing was a result of an internal dispute. live in san jose tonight, elise kirschner, nbc bay area news. a person in a wheelchair is being treated for life-threatening injuries after a truck hit the victim in san francisco's south of market neighborhood. police say the understood identified person was hit about 7:00 this morning while crossing harrison at seventh street. the driver of a toyota pickup truck allegedly hit the victim, who was in a crosswalk. the driver is cooperating with authorities. more heat is coming down on

the bankrupt solar company solyndra. today the white house ordered an independent review of the fremont-based company. it's the latest response to the criticism over the obama administration's half billion loan to the solar company. less than a year later, solyndra laid off more than a thousand workers and declared bankruptcy. today's announcement of an independent review comes as house republicans are preparing for a possible vote on whether to subpoena white house documents related to the solyndra case. republicans want to know if the obama administration and the department of energy knew the company had problems, but granted the looney wan anyway. they share a liver, but also a dream of living independent lives. on tuesday conjoined twins will undergo separation surgery at lucille packard's children's hospital. marianne favro got an interview with the lead surgeon who talked about the challenges of the rare surgery. >> reporter: there are many. the girl's mother contacted dr.

gary hart man about doing the separation surgery right after her durs were born. this is a rare undertaking takes months of planning. it will involve every department in the hospital. angel lena and angelica love dora the explorer. what the 2-year-olds don't love, they never get a break from each other, even after a sisterly squabble. that's to be change. on tuesday doctors at lucille packard children's hospital will separate the conjoined twins. dr. gary hartman is the lead surgeon. >> we think it will probably be four to five hours before they're separated, and then two to three hours of reconstruction. >> reporter: preparing for the rare surgery has taken e months. tiny saline-filled balloons were implanted to gently stretch their skin so they'll have enough skin to cover the hole left by separation. at least 20 people will be in the or the day of surgery, each

person with their own role, which is why the team has gone through several walk-throughs just to make sure everything goes perfectly on tuesday. >> reporter: during the first part of surgery, doctors will open up the girls' bodies to examine the organs that they share, which includes the liver. >> the next part of the procedure will be what we think is the most risky, and that is splitting the liver. they share a single liver. that's a highly vascular organize. about a quarter of our blood goes through our liver every minute. so that's probably the greatest risk of the procedure. >> reporter: even though the operation is rare, dr. hartman has plenty of experience. he has performed five separation surgeries, more than any other surgeon in the nation. his latest was in 2007 at packard. hartman and his team successfully separated conjoined twins. he says they're doing well and enjoying their independence. >> oh, get more.

>> reporter: independence angelina and angelique hope they too will soon face. they practiced what each member of the team must do in the operating room. if all goes well, the twins are expected to be back home by the end of november. and raj, this year the girls can sit across from each other at the thanksgiving table. >> that will be very nice. thank you. what a remarkable team of doctors over at lucille packard. too often we have sad news to report on missing children cases. tonight a happy ending. an 8-year-old autistic boy lost for six boys was found alive this afternoon in virginia. a search party found robert wood jr. near a park where he disappeared on a family outing. this was sunday. dozens of volunteers have been searching for the boy. >> the teen never gave up. and i have to say there was some times that you just had to reach down and find that faith that you were going to find him.

>> search crews say they found the 8-year-old curled in a fetal position in a creek bed. he was rushed to a local hospital to get checked out. we're happy to report he is in good condition. did michael jackson inject himself with the powerful sedative? that's the central question in the manslaughter trial of jackson's former doctor. the defense wrapped up its questioning of an anesthesia expert today. the doctor supports the theory that jackson injected himself with a lethal dose of propofol before his death in 2009. today's testimony directly contradicts the prosecution's lead witness who says murray likely used an iv drip to put jackson to sleep at night. prosecutors will do their cross-examine on monday. a professional poker player with rising debts kills his parents to get a million dollar inheritance. that's the subject of tonight's dateline nbc, and it features a story that unfolded at the castlewood country club in pleasanton three and a half

but she admits some customers read the menu and have just one word for it, gross! the donut threw me off. >> the donuts are everything. >> the egg looks good. the donut throws me off. an eye-opening sight for some people in sea cliff. these shots of a white shark swimming in the water on wednesday. the pilot says the shark was about 15 feet long. the crews spotted it swimming just below the water's surface north of the cement ship in rio del mar. most likely this isn't the great white shark released back into the wild by the monterey bay aquarium that shark was released off the coast of santa barbara. yesterday that picture of the whales. the sharks today. >> can we go back to the grilled cheese? so many food choices today. >> and the donut hamburger. >> they're grilling the donuts too as if there wasn't more of an odd combination. >> maybe the sweet and salty works out. i don't know.

we can all head up to the mountains right now. >> it's going to be great this weekend. we're going to have sun up there. the snow, mike makes it look so easy. in oakland 71 degrees. winds northwest at 9. and as the sunsets, a nice array of orange colors here right across the bay area. now let's bring you into the current numbers. we are starting to drop with some 50s and 60s already in the north bay, with 59 in novato, 70 in livermore and 69 in san jose with also 66 in san mateo. now for this weekend, we're going to find is fog-free conditions. not only for saturday, but it looks like for a gad part of sunday as well with 40s to return in the overnight hours and plenty of warm weather for the weekend. and then we'll be looking at possible showers building into any seven-day forecast. on the satellite radar picture right now, it's clear from the bay area all the way down to los angeles, just a few high clouds as we've been seeing the past couple of days up near eureka. as we zoom out in the wider loop, it's just a mess out here when you look at the storm

track. well have the jet stream just off to the north. we've had several systems passing us on buy. mother nature doesn't really want us to get any rainfall, at least substantial rainfall just yet. that's really what is going to be happening the next 48 hours. we're going to stay dry with warm to mild conditions across the bay area as we head throughout saturday. we'll have the cold start with the widespread 40, but plenty of sunshine, 70s inland. sunday we'll get in on maybe patchy fog by the evening, but it's still going to stay mild here for us. as we head throughout tomorrow, a clear start once again from the north bay down to the south bay. as we head throughout 5:00 and 6:00 p.m., it's still expected to be sunny here. if you are thinking about heading to the beaches, it's not going to be hot like last weekend, but it definitely will be enjoyable. mid 40s in santa rosa. 56 in nap pal. 51 in san jose. and expecting 55 down here into santa cruz. we talked than preview for halloween, and i'm calling it mostly spooky. temperatures are going to be in the 60s with mostly clear skies. as we look at it, a dry forecast

>> okay, jim kozimor joins us from our comcast sports in the newsroom. it is friday. take us into the weekend, jim. >> all right, sounds good, guys. thanks very much. the pac 12 media day held in l.a. cal and stanford hoping to improve. cal ranked number 2 in the preseason polls. there is more than just basketball news out there at today's section. our scott reese in l.a. has more. >> reporter: pac 12 media day was supposed to be about excitement for the upcoming season but that was overshadowed when cal coach mike montgomery announced that last month he was diagnosed with high grade bladder cancer. he had surgery last week, and the good news is that surgery has left him 100% cancer-free. >> i didn't want it to be their problem, but i thought they needed to know what was going on. people that know me, my friends in coaching were concerned because nay know me better than to know i would ever take a day off of practice. so they knew something was going

on. but i just think for them it was like, you know, somebody that you deal with and are around every day has something like that happen, i think they were probably a little bit stunned. but it was a fairly quick back on the court type ew thing. had i had high grade bladder cancer, fact. i am now cancer-free. i thank god for good medical treatment. i thank god for the timing of the discovery of when they found it. because had it gone either way, in either direction for very much longer, it would have been problematic. so i'm very, very lucky. and it gives you a different perspective, but i'm 100% healthy right now. now we have to take it and run with it. >> reporter: that news overshadowing the fact that cal was picked second in the pac 12 by the assembled media. stanford was picked to finish sixth. scott reece, nbc bay area sports. 9-year-old michael bryce is recovering from heart and liver transplants, but sports can
